Bringing Trust and Transparency to the Halal Industry with Blockchain.
As a senior consultant at @T4H, I had the privilege of leading the @Tech4Humanity team in an innovative blockchain initiative that transformed Halal certification and supply chain traceability in Malaysia.
The Situation
Malaysia's $60 billion Halal exports lacked verified origins and ingredient traceability. The manual paper-trail process slowed Halal certification and raised costs for producers. Lack of transparency also enabled food fraud, eroding trust in Halal authenticity worldwide. This had negative economic and social impacts.
For the Muslim community, compromised Halal integrity could lead to inadvertent consumption of non-Halal products - a breach of religious duties. Strengthening Halal assurance was thus critical.
The Task
@Tech4Humanity partnered with the Malaysian government to implement an integrated blockchain system for supply chain transparency and real-time Halal compliance monitoring.
This required aligning a complex network of bodies including JAKIM, customs, port authorities, labs, logistics firms, food manufacturers, distributors, and more.
Our task was to deliver a unified platform balancing transparency, security, and privacy across myriad entities to restore trust in Malaysia's Halal exports.
The Action
We designed a Hyperledger Fabric blockchain to digitize Halal certs and track ingredients from source to consumer. Smart contracts encoded Halal rules for automated compliance checks.
Our enterprise blockchain network was permissioned to protect sensitive supply chain data while allowing regulators shared access. IoT sensors enabled condition monitoring during transport and storage.
We developed mobile apps so consumers could instantly verify Halal authenticity. The apps provided reassurance and prevented consumption of fraudulent products.
Extensive change management was conducted across stakeholders via workshops and training. We also advised JAKIM on governance models for the blockchain ecosystem.
Above all, we were mindful that this initiative had deep social and religious significance. Our solution had to provide assurance while respecting cultural sensitivities.
The Result
The blockchain solution increased Halal certification efficiency over 40% while enabling real-time supply chain visibility.
JAKIM and other bodies gained unified compliance oversight, allowing proactive management. Exporters verified Halal integrity to customers globally, expanding trade opportunities. Consumers enjoyed enhanced trust and peace of mind.
Malaysia strengthened its leadership in the $2 trillion global Halal market. The blockchain approach was a milestone in instilling confidence in Halal products worldwide.
